Thank you.

It's been awhile
since I have written a Frame tutorial,
but I have had several requests for
one. This frame came about while I
was playing with Filters Unlimited
2 and I knew that I had to write a
tutorial for it.
This tutorial
uses the Commercial Filter, Filters
Unlimited 2. For a limited time
(June 24 - September 23, 2002) those
of you who have purchased the original
Filters Unlimited can receive a FREE
upgrade to Fun2. Those of you who
don't have the purchased Filters Unlimited
may purchase Fun2 for only $39.95,
a bargain considering everything that
you receive with Fun2 and the ability
to keep the majority of your plugins
in one place. Please note: If you
have an unregistered version of Filters
Unlimited you will not qualify for
the free upgrade. If you would
like to know more about the "Fun2"
filter please view my How-To Use Fun-2
Tutorial that you can find HERE.
We will be repeating
a lot of the same steps in this tutorial,
however, I feel the end results will
be worth it. *S*
My tutorials are
only guidelines to help you accomplish
a certain creation. Please feel free
to be inventive and take whatever
liberties you would like. I encourage
each of you to do your "own thing"
and make your creation yours! Your
finished creation is yours to do with
as you please.
Screenshots are resized
and compressed for faster loading.
Don't forget to SAVE your work often.
This tutorial is
written in and for PSP Version 7.04
and assumes you have a working knowledge
of PSP and filters at an intermediate
level. I am sure this can easily be
done in Version 6 with a few adjustments
in paths but I have only used Version
7 so I can't make promises *S*
You will need:

A Graphic ~~ I used Running
Free with Flag by Jim Warren. I chose
this graphic for the upcoming one-year
anniversary of 9-11. The flag that
Mr. Warren has added to his Running
Free graphic is wonderful! Mr. Warren
has graciously given me permission
to use all of his works in my tutorials.
You can view his other masterpieces
at his website HERE.
To use this graphic
right click on the graphic and save
to your hard drive.
Step 1:
Open your graphic in PSP and make
a copy of it (Shift+D). The main reason
for making a copy is in case I want
to use the image again and forget
to change the name when I save *S*
You can close out your original graphic.
Remember to save often.
Step 2:
Using your eye dropper tool,
,
choose a light color from your graphic
and left click to choose the foreground
color. Choose a darker color from
your graphic and right click to choose
the background color. As you move
your eye dropper across your graphic
look to the bottom of your Color Palette
and it will show the colors as you
pass over them. Note where I have
the arrow pointed.

Step 3:
Go to Images-->Border. Make
sure symmetric is check and add a
border of 4. Use your magic wand,
tolerance and feather at 0, select
your border to get the marching ants
around it. **Each time you add a border,
use your Magic Wand to select it.
**
Step 4:
Go to Effects-->Plugins--><I.C.NET
Software>-->Filters Unlimited
2. (In the future, I will tell you
to go to your Fun2 filter). Go to
Gradients on the left list and Intensity
mapped to gradient on the right list.

At the bottom of
your screen you will see the gradient
bar. Click that on and choose the
gradient you would like to use. I
used Gradient #6. Click Select for
the gradient. Use the default settings
and click Apply.

Deselect (Ctrl+D
or Selections-->Select None) and
Save.
Step 5:
Toggle your foreground and background
colors so that the light color is
the background. You can do this by
clicking on the arrows at the top
of your Color Palette, see the arrow
in the screenshot below.

Go to Images-->Border
and add a symmetrical border of 10.
Step 6:
Toggle your colors so the dark color
is the background. Add a symmetrical
border of 4. Using your magic wand,
select your border. Go to your Fun2
Filter, Choose your Gradient and click
OK. Keep Selected.
Go to Selections-->Invert.
Effects-->3D-->Cutout and apply
the following settings:

(Offsets=3; Opacity=50; Blur=20; Shadow
Color=Black; Fill Interior UNchecked)
Reapply your
Cutout, but this time change your
Vertical and Horizontal Offsets to
Minus 3. Deselect and Save.
Step 7:
Still having the dark color for your
background color, add a symmetrical
border of 15. Select your border,
go to your Fun2 Filter. Chose the
Noise Filter on your left side and
Pure noise(fore-/background) on the
right side. Move the slider for the
noise to 135 and click Apply. Deselect
and Save. This is what your graphic
should look similar to now.

Step 8:
Add a symmetrical border of 4. Select
your border and apply your Fun2 Gradient
filter as we have done in the previous
steps. Keep selected. Go to Selections-->Invert.
Effects-->3D-->Cutout and apply
the same cutout twice, first with
the plus 3 in the offsets and then
again with the minus 3 in the offsets.
Deselect and Save.
Step 9:
Add a symmetrical border of 20. Select
your border, bring up your Fun2 filter.
On the left side select the Tile/Mirror
Option and on the right side select
the Radial Tile option. Use the default
settings and click Apply.

Step 10:
Add a symmetrical border of
4. Select your border and bring up
your Fun2 Filter. This is where we
will be doing something a little different
*winks*. Choose your Gradient as we
did in previous steps, BUT hold down
the Alt key on your keyboard at the
same time as clicking Apply. This
will apply your gradient, but it will
still keep your Fun2 Filter active.
Click on the Tile/Mirror option on
the left side and the Radial Tile
on the right side. Click Apply, without
holding down the Alt key.
Keep selected.
Go to Selections-->Invert. Effects-->3D-->Cutout
and apply the same cutout twice, first
with the plus 3 in the offsets and
then again with the minus 3 in the
offsets. Deselect and Save.
Step 11:
We really are getting close to being
done adding all of these borders LOL.
Add a symmetrical border of 20.
Select your border, bring up your
Fun2 filter. On the left side select
the Tile/Mirror Option and on the
right side select the Radial Tile
option. Change the Zoom Setting to
156 and click Apply. Deselect and
Save.

Step 12:
Toggle your colors so that the light
color is your background color. Add
one last symmetrical border of 4.
Bring up your Fun2 Filter, apply the
Gradient filter holding down the ALT
key and apply the Radial Tile (in
Tiles/Mirror) with the default settings.
Keep selected. Go to Selections-->Invert.
Effects-->3D-->Cutout and apply
the same cutout twice, first with
the plus 3 in the offsets and then
again with the minus 3 in the offsets.
Deselect and Save. Here is what my
frame looks like now.

Step 13:
This frame is pretty as it stands,
but I wanted to give it a 3D effect.
Change your foreground color styles
to Gradient.
Choose your MD-Gold gradient, (top)
Linear style selected, angle set to
90. **NOTE:
If you are using a different color
gradient in Fun2 than the gold, you
will want to choose a gradient that
will match your borders prior to drawing
your lines.

Go to Layers-->Add
A New Raster Layer. Open your Draw
Tool,
,
set at single line; width=4; antialias
checked, create as vector and close
path UNchecked.

Starting at
the upper left corner of your frame,
hold down the shift key and draw a
straight line to the first border
you come to.

Step 14:
Go to Effects-->3D-->Drop Shadow
and apply the following settings:

(Offsets=1; Opacity=100; Blur=8.2)
Go to Layers-->Duplicate.
Go to Images-->Mirror. Your duplicated
line should be in the upper right
corner now. Go to Layers-->Duplicate.
Go to Images-->Flip. Go to Layers-->Duplicate.
Go to Images-->Mirror. You should
have a line around all 4 corners.
Step 15:
We are going to do the same thing
between the two gold borders around
your Noise Border. Add a new layer.
With your draw tool, draw a straight
line between those two borders, as
shown below. Add a drop shadow, but
change the Opacity to 95 and the blur
to 2.1.

Do the duplicating/mirror
and duplicating/flip as you did in
the above step.
Step 16:
We're done!!! Go to Layers-->Merge-->All
Flatten. If you will be using your
creation to send in to a group, please
resize your image to meet group standards.
To resize, go to Images-->Resize.
Click on the pixel size and enter
the number you want to resize it to
on the longest side. Make sure that
all layers is check and maintain aspect
ratio is checked.

Whenever you
resize an image, it tends to blur
it up a bit. Go to Effects-->Sharpen-->Unsharp
Mask and apply the following settings:

(Radius=2.00; Strength=85; Clipping=5)
I hope you enjoyed
this tutorial as much as I did creating
it for you. Below is another one that
I did with another graphic.
