Michael Johannhanwahr, the creator of Filters
Unlimited, has Filters Unlimited 2 (Fun2) available on the
Internet. For a limited time (June 24 - September 23, 2002)
those of you who have purchased the original Filters Unlimited
can receive a FREE upgrade to Fun2. Those of you who don't
have the purchased Filters Unlimited may purchase Fun2 for
only $39.95, a bargain considering everything that you receive
with Fun2 and the ability to keep the majority of your plugins
in one place. Please note: If you have an unregistered version
of Filters Unlimited you will not qualify for the free upgrade.
I will be the first to admit (as I did to Mr. Johannhanwahr)
that when I first wrote my Fractal
Flower background, I was unaware that it was a commercial
plugin. I offered it for free on that tutorial. As soon as
I was made aware that it was NOT a free plugin I removed the
zip file from the tutorial and directed my students to the
website for purchase. If you received my zip file for Filters
Unlimited or received it from another Tutorial Writer ~~ do
not embarrass yourself by trying to receive the free upgrade.
This tutorial will show you the new options
in Fun2, how to integrate your Filters Unlimited 1 database
into Fun2, and also how I achieved the above graphic using
only Fun2 filters with 1 drop shadow from PSP. For those of
you who have not viewed my original How to Use Filters Unlimited
tutorial, you can view it HERE as
I will not be reiterating what has been previously documented.
My tutorials are only guidelines to help
you accomplish a certain creation. Please feel free to be
inventive and take whatever liberties you would like. I encourage
each of you to do your "own thing" and make your
creation yours! Your finished creation is yours to do with
as you please.
This tutorial is written in and for PSP Version
7.04 and assumes you have a working knowledge of PSP and Filters
at an intermediate level. I am sure this can easily be done
in Version 6 with a few adjustments in paths but I have only
used Version 7 so I can't make promises *S*
FOR THIS TUTORIAL YOU WILL NEED:
JASC's PSP (30 day free trial)- You can get it HERE
Filters Unlimited 2 ~~ You can get it HERE
A Graphic ~~ I used one that I found on Art Today. If you
would like to use the same graphic, please right click and
save to your hard drive.

WHAT'S NEW IN FUN2
Fun2 comes with over 380 filters, the ability
to apply more than one filter without leaving Filters Unlimited,
switching between the original and filtered image in the preview
pane, and being able to use all of your filters that you have
in your original Filters Unlimited without having to reimport
them. The categories now available in your Filters Unlimited
2 are as follows.

There are additional filters in the Buttons-Frames;
Convolution Filters; Distortion Filters; Image Enhancement;
Noise Filters; and Pattern Generators. New to Fun2 are Color
Filters; Edges Round and Square; Frames (4 different categories);
Lens Effects; Lens Filters; Paper Backgrounds; Paper Textures;
and Special Effects 2.
One of the new filters in the Special Effects2
is a Filmstrip. I thought this was fun.

HOW TO INSTALL FUN2
If you don't have a separate Plugins folder
on your hard drive, now is the time to do so. Follow my instructions
on Installing Plugins in PSP7 by going HERE.
To install Fun2, start the SETUP.EXE and follow the instructions.
Make sure you navigate to your Plugins Folder ~~ there is
no need to create a new folder for Fun2 as the program will
create a new folder for you. You must have a graphic open
in able to use Fun2. Once you have a graphic open you will
find Fun2 by going to Effects-->Plugins--><I.C.NET
Software>-->Filters Unlimited 2.0.
Your filter database created in Filters Unlimited
1.0 can be used with Fun2 without having to import all of
the filters that you previously imported into Fun1. To do
this activate your Windows Explorer.

Navigate to the folder where you have your
Filters Unlimited 1 database. Click on your ICNET filters.db.

Go to Edit-->Copy to Folder.

The following screen will pop up. Navigate
to your Filters Unlimited 2.0 folder.

Click OK. Your filters from Fun1 are now
available for use in Fun2. Only one database at a time can
be used in Filters Unlimited. To use your Fun1 filters, choose
Database-->Open and select the copied database. (Please
note that the original Filters Unlimited database does NOT
have a dash between the ICNET and Filters).

Click on Database and check which database
you would like to access.

There are so many wonderful filters in Fun2
that I wanted to keep the two of them separate and find this
is a wonderful option.
Using FUN2
One of the new features in Fun2 is the ability
to see your original graphic and the filtered graphic. When
you click on a filter it will show you what it will look like
if you should click apply. Such as the screenshot below using
the paper textures.

Pressing the Ctrl key will show you what
your original graphic looks like.

When experimenting with a number of filters,
we sometimes forget what the original graphic looks like and
this is an excellent way to remind you.
Another new feature is the ability to continue
to apply new filters without leaving Filters Unlimited. I
have written many tutorials using different filters. I really
appreciate Michael for putting this feature into Fun2 so I
don't always have to go out of Filters Unlimited and back
into it in able to apply the next filter. To apply a new filter
without leaving Filters Unlimited, press the ALT key and Apply
at the same time.
Some of the filters have additional presets
that you can use, instead of the default preset. You will
know when there are additional presets to view when you see
3 gray lines next to the filter. This screenshot is in the
Buttons-->Frames category. I have the arrow pointing to
the 3 gray lines.

Highlight the filter and go to the Presets
tab at the top of the page. When you press the preset tab
you will see additional presets available for that filter.

Choose the one you would like, if any, press
apply and go back to the Navigator tab and press apply if
this preset suits your needs. Of course, when you are fooling
around with the sliders and find a preset that you are apt
to use often, click on your presets tab and press add at the
bottom of the screen and you can use that preset again.
One other thing that is new on some of the
filters is the ability to flip the filter either horizontally
- as in the lens flare, swapping sides ~~ as in the paper
rolls in Special Effects2, or invert from white to black ~~
as in the Border White fades in Special Effects2.
I would also like to point out that if you
should happen to use the buttons and frames category and activate
the round button, your outcome will depend on if you have
left the graphic at background or if you have promoted your
graphic to layer. If you leave it as background, it will include
the background color currently on your color palette.

If, prior to going into Filters Unlimited,
you go to Layers-->Promote to Layer you will have a transparent
background.

This also works the same in Special Effects2->Border
White Fade 1 or 2.
There are also a couple of gradients that
you can change your gradient to. In fact if you click on the
gradient you will see approximately 80 plus gradients that
you can choose.

LET'S MAKE THE TOP GRAPHIC
Step 1:
Open your graphic in PSP. If you are using the supplied
graphic, it is already resized to 350 on the longest side.
If you are using another graphic, please resize it to 350
on the longest side. Duplicate your graphic (Shift+D) and
work on the duplicated copy. The reason for doing this is
if you want to use this graphic for other work and forget
to save with a different name. Go to Layers-->Promote to
Layer so you will have a transparent background.
Step 2:
Go to Effects-->Plugins-->I.C.NET Software-->Filters
Unlimited 2. Click on Paper Texture on the left side and Canvas
Medium on the right side. Press Alt+Apply as we are going
to be adding additional filters to our graphic.
Step 3:
While still in Filters Unlimited, go to Lens Flare. I used
Flare 08 and checked the Flip Horizontal. Below you will see
the screenshots.

Not flipped
Flipped
When you are satisfied with the placement
of your lensflare, press Alt plus the Apply button as we have
one more filter to apply.
Step 4:
You should still be in Filters Unlimited. Go to the Edges
Round category. I chose Round Edge 05. Click Apply and you
should now have this image.

Step 5:
Open a new image the same size as the image you just created.
. My was 350x277, 16 million colors, transparent background.
Flood fill with any color and bring up your Filters Unlimited
2. Navigate to your Paper Backgrounds category and choose
the filter of your choice. I used the Japanese Paper, Nature.
Press Alt plus Apply.
Step 6:
Navigate to your Gradients. Click on your gradients bar at
the bottom of your screen and choose the gradient of your
choice. I used #77.

When you are happy with your gradient press
Alt plus Apply as we are going to do one more thing *smiles*.
Step 7:
Navigate to your Buttons-Frames. I used the 3D Glass Frame3
and changed the frame size to 23. Click Apply. You should
now have something similar to this.

Step 8:
Activate the first image that you made. Go to Edit-->Copy
(Ctrl+C). Activate the framed image, go to Edit-->Paste-->As
a New Layer (Ctrl+L). The image reaches over the edge a tad,
so let's resize it. Go to Image-->Resize. Enter 90 in the
percentage field and make sure resize all layers is UNchecked.

Step 9:
I wanted to add a little depth to the original graphic so
I added a drop shadow. Make sure you are on Layer 2, the first
image you made. Go to Effects-->3D-->Drop Shadow and
apply the following settings.

(offsets = 5; opacity=77; blur=36.5)
That's it! You are done. *S* Go to Layers-->Merge-->All
Flatten and save as a .jpg.
I hope this tutorial
has given you a better understanding
of Filters Unlimited and its
potential.
