JASC, the powers that create
Paint Shop Pro, have outdone themselves with their
latest Version - V8 as I refer to it. One of V8's
new effects is called Balls & Bubbles and a
few in the Public Beta Newsgroup have shared what
they have made, JP has made some exquisite Faberge
Eggs and hopefully she will do a tutorial on what
she has done. In the meantime, several others that
I have shown what I have created have requested
a tutorial, so this tutorial shows you how I created
my eggs. Besides, it's just in time for Easter!
I am only going to show you the
basics. I want YOU to be creative and make your
egg truly yours. Balls & Bubbles uses Bump Maps
and Environment Maps. Bump Maps are similar to Textures
and are normally grayscale, creating intermediate
heights on the surface. When using a bump map on
an existing surface, such as the curved surface
of a ball, and forms a new "bumpy" surface.
Because of the shape of the surface, it reflects
light back to the view at different directions and
creates a 3D appearance. Environment maps are similar
to Patterns and in Balls & Bubbles is intended
to simulate surface reflections of some scene behind
and to the sides of the viewer. In this tutorial
I use gradients for the environment map.
Remember, my tutorials are only guidelines
to help you accomplish a certain creation. Please
feel free to be inventive and take whatever liberties
you would like. I encourage each of you to do your
"own thing" and make your creation yours!

This tutorial is written in and for
PSP8 and assumes you have a working knowledge of
PSP. This tutorial cannot be done in PSP7.
YOU WILL NEED: JASC's PSP8 (30
day free trial) - You can get it HERE
My Gold Glitter Tile - You can get it HERE
~ Right click and save to your hard drive. Put this
into your MyPSP8Folders/Patterns folder.
Bump Maps - Flaming Pear, the creators of Super
Blade Pro, has some free environment and bump map
textures and patterns that I have used in this tutorial.
I used Pack 8 in the Free Extra Textures area -
You can get it HERE.
You might want to snatch all of them while you
are there ~smiles~
** Depending on where you instructed PSP8 to install
your MyPSP8Folders - unzip them into your BumpMaps
Folder in MyPSP8Folders. Your preferences should
automatically be pointing to this folder upon installation.
First lets make our environment
map. Obviously you can use any pattern you like,
but I want to show you what I did and used for these
eggs.
Step 1:
Open a new image 200x200, transparent background.
You can use any gradient that you like, I used one
of Mahogany's gradients, called Mah_Gold Satin,
and she has graciously allowed me to share this
gradient with you. You can get it HERE
if you would like to use it, put it into your MyPSP8Folders/Gradients/
folder. Open your foreground Material Palette and
click on gradient. Scroll to the gradient you would
like to use. Using the radial style, change the
angle to 90 and repeats to 33. Again, you can use
as many or as few repeats as you would like, this
is just the way that I did it. Click OK.
Step 2:
Flood fill your image with your gradient. This is
how mine looked.
Step 3:
Save your new pattern as a .jpg in your MyPSP8Folders/Environments
folder.
Now let's make our egg.
Step 1:
Open a new image 300x400 pixels, transparent background.
Add a new raster layer.
Step 2:
Go to Effects-->Artistic Effects-->Balls and
Bubbles. You will have this opening screen.
On the Shape tab, I have Single
Ball or Bubble checked and Maximum possible size
checked.
Step 3:
Click on the Surface Tab. Set your Opacity to 100;
Shininess to 34 and your Gloss to 19.
Click on the materials tab. Click
on the Pattern tab and navigate to your md-goldglitter
tile. Click OK.
Step 4:
Click on the Maps tab and check both the Bump Map
and Environment Tab using these settings. In the
Bump map I have Smoothness=20; Depth=100; Fit bump
map UNchecked and the size of 55. In the Environment
map I have the Opacity at 74 and choose Environment
map.
To choose your bump map click
the down arrow and navigate to Iron58.
In the Environment Map click
the down arrow and navigate to the gradient that
you made.
Step 5:
Click on your Illumination Tab and use these settings.
Ambience Maximum=50; Minimum=0; Color=white; Highlight
size =51. You can move the position to where you
think it looks best by using your mouse and moving
the ball around.
Click OK and this is how my egg
looks now. SAVE.
Step 6:
Go to Effects-->Geometric Effects-->Perspective
Vertical. Use a setting of MINUS 72 in distortion
and Transparent for the Edge Mode. Save.
You are done! How easy is that
to make an elegant carved egg. There are several
variations that you can do depending on your bump
map and your environment map. You can also add a
some noise to your egg if you like. On this egg
I used Noise set at Gaussian Blur and Monochrome
checked.
You can also use the Soft Focus
(found under Adjust-->Softness-->Soft Focus)
and play around with the random button as I did
for this egg.
One last egg that I had fun with
was making my gradient with not so many repeats
and making a seamless tile. I also used a different
bump map and experimented with different settings.
The possibilities of the types
of egg you can come up with are endless! I hope
you have enjoyed this tutorial as much as I enjoyed
creating it for you!
