FOR THIS TUTORIAL YOU WILL NEED:
JASC's PSP8 (30 day free trial) - You can get it HERE

Screenshots are resized and compressed for faster loading. Don't forget to SAVE your work often.

This tutorial is written in and for PSP8 and assumes you have a working knowledge of PSP.

We've learned how to do Character Formatting on floating and vector text, and we've learned how powerful vector text can be. This tutorial will show you how you can have some more fun with vector text using Convert Text To Curves.

Step 1:
Open a new image 400x200 transparent background. Click on the text tool. On your tool ribbon select Vector, anti-alias checked. Choose the font and size you want. I used Ariel with the size of 30.

Step 2:
Choose your background color on your material palette, foreground doesn't matter as long as you have stroke width set to 0.0. I chose a dark purple for this tutorial.

Step 3:
Click on your image and your text dialog box will appear. Type in your text. Click Apply.

Step 4:
Your text will now appear inside of a box with nodes.

Step 5:
You can change the colors or outline of your entire text or you can change each individual letter. Let's change the entire text first. Granted you can do this right in the text box as shown in the Vector Text tutorial, but this will show you a different way to do this. Right Click on your text and choose Convert Text to Curves-->As Single Shape.

Click on your Layer Palette and click on the plus sign next to the Vector Layer, you will see your text.

Right click on your text and choose properties.

You will then get this dialog box.

Here is where you can change the color, gradient, or pattern of your text by clicking on the fill. You can also add an outline around your text by change the color in the stroke and adjusting the stroke width.

This is how my text now looked after I added a stroke color and width value and clicked okay.

Here are the settings I used for doing a pattern in the text and a smaller outline.

Now let's experiment with individual letters. Right click on your text, choose Convert Text to Curves-->As Character Shapes. Each letter can now be modified. Go to your Layer Palette and you will see each letter under the text from the last letter of your text to the first letter of your text. I have made my layer palette longer to show you, however you don't need to do this as the layer palette in PSP8 now has a slider on the right side so you scroll up and down to choose the letter you would like to modify.

Click on the letter that you would like to modify and that letter will have nodes around that letter only.

You can now manipulate that letter using the nodes, as we did at the beginning of this tutorial. You can move the letters, make the taller, shorter, wider, skinnier, rotate them, and using the shift or control key you can change the shape

You can also change the color and/or outline of your letter by right clicking on your letter and clicking properties as we did with single object.

You can change more than one letter at a time, if they are in succession, by holding down the shift key and selecting the letters. You will then receive your box with nodes around all letters.

You can manipulate all of the letters at one time and change the colors at once also, as I did in the screenshot below.

When you're done with all of your text editing, right click on your Vector Layer and choose Convert To Raster Layer.

Step 6:
After you convert your text to a Raster Layer, you can add a drop shadow if you like. Go to Effects-->3D-->Drop Shadow. You can use my settings if you like or play around with your own settings.

I hope you enjoyed this lesson on Vector Text as much as I enjoyed creating it for you. Let's learn how to create Text On A Path, click the link below.
