This
tutorial is written
in and for PSP8
and assumes you
have a working
knowledge of
PSP. This tutorial
can be done in
PSP7, however
the paths may
be different.
YOU WILL
NEED:

A Photo that
needs a facelift
I'm
sure we all have
photos where
we need to do
some "cosmetic
surgery"
on. This tutorial
will show you
how to do a facelift
on an old lady.
The picture I
am using is from
ClipartToday.
No outside plugins
are necessary
to accomplish
this tutorial,
we will be using
only tools and
effects found
in PSP ~~ Edge
Preserving Smooth,
Selection tool,
Clone tool, Soften
tool, and the
Scratch Removal
tool.
Remember,
my tutorials
are only guidelines
to help you accomplish
a certain creation.
Please feel free
to be inventive
and take whatever
liberties you
would like. I
encourage each
of you to do
your "own
thing" and
make your creation
yours!
Screenshots
are resized and
compressed for
faster loading.
Step
1:
Open your
graphic in PSP
and make a copy
of it (Shift+D).
The main reason
for making a
copy is in case
I want to use
the image again
and forget to
change the name
when I save *S*
You can close
out your original
graphic. Remember
to save often.
Step
2:
Duplicate your
layer. Layers-->Duplicate.
We will be working
on the duplicated
layer. Zoom in
on your image
to about 200%
or more. This
will enable you
to see what you
are doing a lot
better. The photo
will be pixilated,
but when you
zoom back to
100% you will
see the difference.
Step
3:
Activate your
Freehand Selection
tool, ,
set to Point
to Point. Replace
Mode, 0 Feather,
0 Smoothing,
Antialias Checked.

The
first area that
I am going to
work on is her
forehead. Click
around and select
your area. You
can see by the
screenshot below
that I have selected
close to the
hairline and
above the above
the eyebrows.

Step
4:
Go to Adjust-->Add/Remove
Noise-->Edge
Preserving Smooth
or if you have
your Photo Toolbar
active you can
choose it from
the Enhanced
Photo Toolbar.
(PSP7 - Go to
Effects-->Noise-->Edge
Preserving Smooth).

You
will get this
dialog box. I
used a setting
of 10 for this
part of the picture,
however you can
adjust it to
your liking.
The left pane
shows you the
original and
the right pane
will show you
how it will look
with the amount
of smoothing
you have chosen.
Click OK when
you are satisfied
with your result.

I
zoomed back to
100% and this
is how my old
lady looks now.

Step
5:
Continue to do
each part of
the face that
you would to
correct. I chose
fairly small
areas and adjusted
the amount of
smoothing for
each one. I won't
show you a screenshot
for each area
that I did, however
this is the part
of the eye that
I selected. For
this particular
part of the face,
I chose a smoothing
value of 5. I
did each cheek,
the chin, the
nose, between
the upper lip
and the nose,
and the eyes.
Don't forget
to do her neck.

Step
6:
To get rid of
excess markings
or discoloration,
for example under
the eyes, I used
the Clone tool,
.
For this particular
graphic I changed
the size to 9,
reduced the Hardness
to 41, and changed
the Step to 1.
You will want
to adjust your
settings for
the image that
you are working
on. With your
Clone tool activated,
right click on
an area of the
color that you
want to use to
cover the discolored
area.

Instead
of dragging over
the area, I "dabbed"
or did several
clicks. You will
probably need
to continue right
clicking to grab
new color and
then continue
on. This is also
where the Undo
feature (Edit-->Undo
or Ctrl+Z) really
becomes your
friend.
Step
7:
When you are
finished with
your cloning
you might want
to "soften"
the areas that
you cloned. It
also works quite
nicely for some
of the little
stray pixels
that might have
gotten missed
when selecting
and using the
Edge Preserving
Smooth. I know
I had some around
her nostrils
and the upper
lip. Activate
your Soften tool,
you will find
it in the flyout
under your Clone
tool.

Adjust
your size on
your tool option
palette, I changed
mine to 16 and
I left the rest
of the settings
to the default.
Run your mouse
over the areas
that you want
to blend and
soften. She's
looking much
better now, don't
you think? However,
we must do something
with the neck
veins.

Step
8:
We will be using
the Scratch Remover
tool, which is
in the flyout
with the clone
tool .
However you can
only use this
tool on a background
layer. So let's
go to Layers-->Merge-->All
Flatten. Activate
the Scratch Remover.
I used the Rectangle
box and changed
the width to
10. Again, depending
on your graphic
you will want
to choose the
settings that
will work best
for you. Draw
out on one vein
and release your
mouse.

Continue
working on each
area of your
neck, changing
the width as
needed, until
you are satisfied.
Again, the undo
is your friend.
I think we have
taken YEARS off
of this lady,
what do you think?
