This tutorial is written in and for PSP8.10 and assumes
you have a working knowledge of PSP at a beginners level.
YOU WILL NEED:
JASC's PSP8 (30 day free trial) - You can get it HERE
A graphic ~~ The graphic I used is one of my own, a photograph taken
during the 2003 California Firestorm. I took the picture at 3:00 in
the afternoon in my backyard. If you would like to use this photo
to practice the tutorial, please right click on the graphic and save
it to your hard drive.

Screenshots are resized and compressed for faster
loading.
I belong to Yahoo Group called psptutgrads and
each week they send out 6 WET's (graphics) for us to play with and
use our imagination. Since I have been busy writing more how-to tutorials
for PSP8, well it's been a long time since I have just "played"
in PSP but I decided to do so this past week. Everyone enjoyed what
I came up with and clamored for a tutorial ~grin~. I wanted to make
sure that my "creation" would work with different graphics
and was delighted to see that it does. I came up with the name "Polar
Feedback" because those are the two main PSP8 Effects that I
used.
Step 1:
Open the graphic that you would like to use. Go to Window-->Duplicate
(Shift+D) to make a copy of your graphic. Close the original graphic.
The reason I do this is in case I want to use the graphic again and
forget to change the name when saving.
Step 2:
Go to Layer/Promote Background Layer.

Step 3:
Go to Effects/Reflection Effects/Feedback.

You will get the following dialog box. Use the
following settings.

(Opacity=59; Intensity=100; Horizontal Offset=56; Vertical Offset=MINUS
87)

Step 4:
Go to Layers/Duplicate.

Step 5:
Go to Image/Mirror.

Step 6:
Go to your Layer Palette and on your duplicate layer reduce the opacity
to about 50%.

Step 7:
Go to Layers/Merge/Merge Down

Step 8:
Go to Effects/Distortion Effects/Polar Coordinates

In your polar coordinates dialog box use the
rectangle to polar setting and transparent.

This is how my image now looked.

Step 9:
I wanted to soften the edges. Go to Selections/Select All (Ctrl+A).
Selections/Float (Ctrl+F). Selections/Modify/Inside/Outside Feather

I chose Both and the feather amount of 10.

Go to Selections/Invert. This is what my image
now looked like.

Press the delete key on your keyboard about
4 times and you are done.
That was pretty simple wasn't it. Depending
on the shape of your graphic you can get some outstanding, and different,
results. For example I cropped the original graphic to more of a square.

Following the same exact steps as above this
is how my Polar Feedback now looks.

You can save your finished graphic as a pspimage
or a jpg, however if you save it as a jpg you will no longer have
a transparent background. If you save it as a gif the feathered edge
could give you a problem. I personally would save it as a .pspimage
until you know what you want to do with it. Perhaps send it in email
or put it on a webpage. If you want to put it on a webpage you can
do as I did and add a new layer, send it to the bottom, and put the
background of the webpage or any other background that you like.
If you have any problems, comments
or questions please do not hesitate to E-mail
me.
