This
tutorial is written
in and for PSP8
and assumes you
have a working
knowledge of
PSP.
YOU WILL
NEED:
JASC's PSP8 (30
day free trial)
- You can get
it HERE
While
there are a lot
in the preferences
that remains
the same from
PSP7 to V8, there
are also a number
of new items
that you may
not be aware
of. This tutorial
will show you
what you can
now customize
in your Preferences
in V8.
I
would leave the
majority of these
as they are,
until you become
more familiar
with the program.
However, there
are a few that
I changed right
away. Remember,
this is what
I changed. It
doesn't mean
that you need
to do the same.
To
find your Preferences
to to Files-->Preferences.
I have a screenshot
of your options
for customizing
below:

Let's
start with General
Program Preferences.
Below is the
dialog box that
will open.

The
first tab is
Undo - I didn't
change anything
here. I also
left the View
tab defaults
as they were.

Display
and Caching is
a new tab in
your General
Preferences.
This is where
you will find
the settings
for using Precise
Cursors and Show
Brush Outlines,
which previously
was on your paintbrush
tool options
box. If you want
to remember the
last type of
extension that
you used in the
save-as dialog
check re-use
last type in
file save-as
dialog. I also
changed the size
of my thumbnails
to 100 as this
gives you a better
overall view
when using the
effects browser,
in my opinion.

Your
Palettes tab
allows you to
check or uncheck
which of your
palettes you
would liked docked
or not docked.
It also has options
for your Color
Palette.

The
browser tab allows
you to change
the appearance
of your thumbnails
and the size.
If you Save Browser
files to disk
PSP will save
the current browser
selection to
the folder on
your hard drive.
This will enable
PSP to load the
graphics in that
folder faster,
however it can
take up a lot
of your hard
drive space and
they are never
automatically
deleted. I personally
uncheck the Save
Browser files
to disk. The
Automatically
update the thumbnails
option will slow
down the rendering
process a little,
however it has
the advantage
of rendering
all of the graphics
in a file, not
just the graphics
the last time
you viewed the
file.

If
you don't like
the Splash Screen
to appear each
time you open
PSP, click the
Miscellaneous
tab. Uncheck
Show Splash screen
when application
starts. I also
changed the Recently
used file list
from 4 to 10.
This is also
where you can
choose to automatically
delete the files
on your clipboard,
have the system
ask if they should
be deleted or
if those items
should remain
on your Clipboard
for using in
other applications.

The
Units tab allows
you to set if
you would like
your ruler to
be set in pixels,
inches or centimeters.
You can display
your ruler as
"black on
white" or
"toolbar
colors"
The default resolution
can also be changed
to centimeters
and the size
that you would
like. I prefer
200 myself.

The
Transparency
tab allows you
to set the appearance
of your transparent
background that
appears when
you are working
on a transparent
layer. The color
and size you
choose will be
reflected whenever
you view a transparent
graphic or a
transparent background
in a graphic.

Photosharing
is currently
set up using
Shutterfly (see
my tutorial for
more on Shutterfly
HERE).
Due to this being
a tab in general
preferences,
I am thinking
(hoping) that
we will eventually
be able to add
additional photosharing
sites.

Your
warnings tab
allows you to
choose which
action you would
want or not want
to be warned
about occurring.

There
are several auto
actions that
you can choose
to have done
silently (always),
never done, or
be prompted if
it should be
done.
CMYK
and File Format
Preferences has
not changed from
PSP7, although
PostScript now
support has been
improved from
Postscript Level
2 to Postscript
Level 3.

File
Format Associations
now includes
support for a
number of new
file formats
including:
- AutoFX
(AFX)
- Brooktrout
Fax (BRK)
- CALS
Raster (CAL
- Microstation
Drawing
(DGN)
- AutoCAD
Drawing
(DWG)
- JPEG
2000 (JP2)
- Kofax
(KFX)
- Lazer
View (LV)
- NCR
G4 (NCR)
- Scalable
Vector Graphics
(SVG)
- Wireless
Bitmap (WBMP)
- X
Windows
Bitmap (XBM)
- X
Windows
Pixmap (XPM)
- X
Windows
Dump (XWD)
I personally
have all of the
file associations
to be associated
with PSP8, however
the choice is
up to you.

In
PSP7 we could
point PSP to
find folders
in 3 different
locations and
only a there
were only a few
types of files
that we could
use. In V8 we
have an enormous
amount of file
types and we
also have an
unlimited amount
of folders that
we can point
PSP to.
Click
on your File
Type that you
would like to
add. In this
example I am
adding plugins.
Click on Add
and then Browse.
Browse to where
you have your
folder.
Click
OK and click
the white space
to add another.
As you can see
below I have
several folders
added. You can
then choose which
Plugins you would
like to load
or not load.

Do
this for each
of your file
types.
Color
Management, Monitor
Gamma and Auto
Saving remains
the same as in
PSP7.

New
in preferences
is Reset the
Application.
You can use this
feature to reset
PSP without having
to go into the
registry or using
any special keyboard
configurations.
You can also
use this setting
for deleting
your cache files.
Check on the
box that you
would like reset
and click OK.
If
you have any
problems, comments
or questions
please do not
hesitate to E-mail
me.
