How often have you taken a photograph only to have telephone wires, antennas, or cage slats in the way of your photo. Using PSP's Scratch Remover Tool and the Clone Tool make it easy to remove these unwanted objects. The Poppy is California's State Flower and when they are in full bloom, in the Spring, they can be awesome. This past Spring Larry and I went in search of the elusive poppy and I did get some very good pictures. There were times that Larry stopped on the side of the road so I could take some really good ones, and there were other times that I would see a scene and take a shot from car window. Of course, the car antenna would get in the way <sigh>. In this tutorial we are going to be changing this photograph with the antenna in the way....

To this, where we not only removed the antenna, but the sign in the left side and added some clouds to the sky, used the one step photo fix script and have this. What a difference a little work can do.

If you would like to use the first photograph for practice, and to follow along with the tutorial, please right click on it and save to your hard drive.

Step 1:
Open the photograph that you would like to clean up in PSP8. Duplicate your image (Shift+D). The main reason for making a copy is in case I want to use the image again and forget to change the name when I save *S* You can close out your original graphic.

Step 2:
Activate your Scratch Remover Tool on your Toolbar. You will find it in the flyout with the Clone Tool.

NOTE: You can only use the Scratch Remover tool on a Background Layer so do not promote the background to a regular layer.

On your tool options palette you can select the width of your tool and the shape. I usually stick with the rectangle selection box. For removing the top part of the antenna on the sky I used a width of 42.

Step 3:
Place your cursor as close the the top of your antenna as possible and draw down like this.

When you release your mouse you should have something like this.

Notice that there is a tiny bit of the antenna left on the very top of the photo. Use the scratch remover tool at a bit of an angle to remove it.

Step 4:
Now let's work on the Poppies area. Because there is a lot of different colors, when you release your mouse you will probably have some blurred areas. This is where the clone tool will come into play. First place your cursor on the top of what is left of the antenna and pull all the way down to the bottom.

After you release your mouse this is how mine looked. Notice the blur.

Step 5:
Let's fix up that blurry area. Activate your clone tool. The only thing I changed on my tool options palette was the size. I changed it from 32 to 16.

You need to "set" your clone tool to know where you want to clone from. Right click on the poppies next to the blur.

Now left click over the blur area. Keep clicking over the various areas. Do NOT drag your mouse as it will continue to blur if you do, just click click here and click click there. ~smiles~ Here is how part of mine looks now.

When you run out of Poppies in the blurred area to the left, then move your mouse over to the right - where there are more poppies - and right click to set the cloning from there. You can also clone in more poppies in the more desolate areas if you like. See how nice it's turning out?

Step 6:
Did you notice the sign on the left side of the original graphic? Let's clone that out too.

Right click your clone tool to the right of the sign. Now left click over the sign.

Gee, you never knew it was there did you?

Step 7:
On the original picture there are some pretty clouds and I would like to add them to more of the sky. I changed the size of my clone tool to 105. Right clicked on the upper half of the clouds. Yes your shape will go over the edge.

Now left click on the blue area to the right of the clouds.

WOW! Now go to your Photo Toolbar and in the Enhanced Photos click on the One Step Photo Fix and watch the magic. I then added a mask and voila.

I hope this tutorial has helped you learn what you can accomplish with the Scratch Remover and Clone Tools. PSP is awesome!
