This is my creation, any similarity
to other tutorials on the Internet is unintentional.
Please do not copy or place this tutorial or any graphics
to any other place without written permission directly
from me. Thank you.
This tutorial
is written in and for PSP8.10 and assumes you have
a working knowledge of PSP at an intermediate level,
however I do try to write all my tutorials so that
even the most novice beginner can understand it
and accomplish it.
YOU
WILL NEED:
JASC's PSP8.10
(30 day free trial) - You can get it HERE
A graphic for your globe ~~ I don't know
where the graphic that I used came from, so I cannot
offer it for download. Any graphic will suffice
though.
Remember, my tutorials are only guidelines
to help you accomplish a certain creation. Please
feel free to be inventive and take whatever liberties
you would like. I encourage each of you to do your
"own thing" and make your creation yours!
Screenshots
are resized and compressed for faster loading.
I receive many requests asking
if I can write a tutorial for on a certain subject
or effect. I do try to honor all requests in a timely
manner, however this does not always happen. I received
this request to write an Animated Snow globe for
PSP8 a couple of months ago, just as I was getting
The
PSP8 Classroom started. I really thank Roger
for his understanding and patience until I could
get to his request. This tutorial is dedicated to
Roger.
We will be learning several different
aspects of PSP8 to create your own Snow globe and
we will be making our own base for your snowglobe.Of
course, if you would like to take the easy way out
and create a base from a ding that is entirely up
to you, or you might have a tube of a base that
you would like to use. ~smiles~ This is a long tutorial
and contains several screenshots.
Step 1:
Open a new image 300x300, 16 million colors, vector
background. Save your image! It is very important
to save often when working with PSP, or any graphics
program for that matter. Give your image a unique
name and save it to a folder with the .pspimage
extension. Activate the image that you want in your
globe and minimize it on your workspace.

Set your foreground materials
to transparent and your background materials to
the color white.

Step 2:
Open your preset shapes, ,
on your tools toolbar. On your tools option palette
choose Ellipse for the shape, antialias and create
as vector checked. Retain style UNchecked.

Holding your shift key down on
your keyboard, draw out a circle from the top left
of your canvas to the bottom right, this will be
your globe. Leave enough room to add a base to your
globe.
To center your globe go to Objects-->Align-->Center
in Canvas and your globe is automatically placed in the
center of your image.

Step 3:
Go to your layer palette, right click on your layer
and choose convert to raster layer.

Activate your magic wand on your tool
bar, you will find it in the fly out of your Selections
Tools.

Click on your transparent background,
on the outside of your globe. Go to Selections-->Invert
and you will have marching ants around your globe.
Press the delete key on your
keyboard to remove the white. You are going to keep
those ants marching for the majority of this tutorial.
DO NOT DESELECT until I tell you to. Make sure you
save often.
Step 4:
Go to Effects-->3D-->Cutout and apply the following
settings.

(Offsets=10; Opacity=29; Blur=25)
Step 5:
Add a new raster layer. To add a new layer you can either
go to Layers-->New Raster Layer or on your Layer Palette
click on the white paper to add a new layer. Reapply
the cutout settings, but this time change the vertical
and horizontal offsets to MINUS 10, leaving the opacity
and blur the same.
Step 6:
Keeping your marching ants selected, go to Layers-->Merge-->Merge
Down. Name your merged layer Globe. Do not deselect.
Keep those ants marching ~smiles~ and SAVE.

Step 7:
Add a new layer and name it highlights.
Reverse your materials on your materials palette,
making your foreground material white and your background
material transparent. Simply click on the double
arrow between your materials to reverse the order.
Activate your Pen Tool, ,
using the following settings on your tool options
palette. Uncheck create as vector and check simple
mode. Choose draw in the mode (middle one) and freehand
in segment type. Change your line width to 12.

Draw out 3 lines on your globe
for highlights, similar to what I have below.

Step 8:
Go to Adjust-->Blur-->Gaussian Blur and set
it at about 6.50.

Step 9:
We are now going to add the snow. Make sure your
marching ants are selected. Oops! You say you have
no marching ants? Simply activate your magic wand
and your marching ants miraculously reappears. ~smiles~
Trust me, it took me a bit to figure that one out
LOL.
Add a new layer and name it snow1.
Activate your Airbrush tool ,
you will find it in the fly out of your painting tools.
On your tool options palette use the round brush. Set
your size to 200, hardness 25, step 25, density 25, thickness
100, rotation 0 , opacity 25.

Press the top of your globe once
to apply your snow. With the marching ants moving
you don't have to worry about splattering snow on
the outside of your globe.
Step 10:
We are going to be adding 2 more layers of snow,
but we want them to be in a group layer, and you
will understand why in a moment. Go to your layer
palettes and add a new layer group - make sure you
are on your Snow 1 layer.

You can name this group Snow if you
like. Now click on your snow1 layer and add a new raster
layer, naming it snow2. Using your airbrush to apply
your snow again.
Step 11:
While on your snow2 layer add one more raster
layer called snow3. Once again apply your airbrush
snow.
Step 12:
We now want to change all of the snow layers to
a different opacity and blend mode. We could change
each layer if we wanted to, however we can easily
change ALL layers at the same time because they
are grouped together. Click on the Group Layer on
your layer palette, change the opacity to 32 and
the blend mode to Dissolve.
Step 13:
Have you been saving? Are your marching ants still marching?
You should be answering YES to both of these questions.
Click on your group layer, add a new layer and name it
contents. Go to Layers-->Arrange-->Send to Bottom.

Keep everything selected. I bet you
think I forgot about your image that we had activated
and minimized on your workspace. Nope, not me ~smiles~.
Bring up your image and copy it either by going to Edit-->Copy
or Ctrl+C on your keyboard. Activate your Globe image,
making sure that you are on the contents layer and the
marching ants are indeed marching, and go to Edit-->Paste->Paste
Into Selection.

Now if the image you want to use
to paste into your globe is HUGE, then you may want to
resize it so it is no larger than 300 on the longest
side.
Deselect (Ctrl+D) or go to Selections-->Select
None.
Okay, we have our globe made, let's
continue on to the next page and learn how to make our
base and then animate our globe.
