While creating V8 The Easy Way, I went over on time on Disk 1 and the What's New video was corrupt. Thankfully, it was a mainly my talking about what's new in PSP8 and not a lot of "action" and it didn't corrupt any of the lessons.

For those who are curious as to what is new in PSP8 and which lessons or disk they can find some of these things, I have written this up for you. There are a couple of videos that you can review if you choose to do so, this will also give those of you who aren't familiar with my CD's what they can expect.

First of all, all of the menu icons are new,

and with the exception of files open file save, all dialogs remember their last used size and position. All effects dialogs can be resized, SEE VIDEO BY CLICKING HERE, the preview pane can be shown or hidden, most of the effects dialogs have the ability to save or load presets and just click the dice to randomize the parameters. If you double click on the top of a dialog box, it will go to full screen.

Holding down the shift key while selecting a menu item will bypass the command dialog and run the command with the last used parameters.

The material palette has two different configurations. One is designed for vertical orientation and the other is for horizontal orientation. As you resize the Material Palette it will switch to the appropriate layout - learn more about the Material Palette in lesson 4.

A list of all of the currently used keyboard accelerators can be found on the help menu.

The menu layout has changed significantly since PSP7 and those changes are noted in the lessons reflecting the different menus. Also, for those of you who just can't live without the PSP7 workspace, JASC has created a workspace for you to help you to adjust. Go to File/Workspace/Load. Click on Paint Shop Pro 7 at the bottom of the list.

The file locations dialog now supports dedicated locations for a number of file types, and the previous restriction of no more than 3 locations has been removed. Learn more about this in Lesson 1 - Preferences. Also in Lesson 1 you will find the new reset preferences dialog that can reset various aspects of PSP to the out of box configuration without requiring you to edit your registry or secret keystrokes when starting the application.

The new Learning Center (Lesson 3) provides a location in the application for displaying short tutorials called Quick Guides.

Customization! WOW! You aren't going to believe what you can do here! Not only can you customize to your hearts content, you can also create new toolbars and menus to your liking in Lesson 2.

PSP8 now has a full blown scripting engine based on the Python programming language. This will record your keystrokes and there are TWO lessons on Disk 1 regarding scripts.

In the Image Menu (Lesson 9) canvas size, borders, and frames are all redesigned and the Image Information now supports EXIF data from digital cameras.

The Effects Browser has been completely redesigned to now generating a page of thumbnails that show the affect of applying a particular preset for a given effect. SEE VIDEO BY CLICKING HERE The add noise dialog now supports gaussian noise and a monochrome mode.

New photo correction tools for correcting pincushion, fisheye, and barrel distortion are now in the Adjust Menu (Disk 2). In PSP7 Grey World was an option in the Manual Color Correction dialog, it now has its own filter in PSP8 and the Manual Color Corrections dialog now supports explicit settings of both source and target colors. This is now a soft focus filter that simulates the effect of a photographic soft focus filter and a magnifying lens effect that places a magnifying lens over a portion of the image.

Balls and Bubbles places one or more balls or bubbles on an image. There is a halftone filter that simulates the halftone process used in printing. Seamless tiling now supports a number of different modes to make an image seamless. No longer will you need to use the 20/20 program and you will learn all about these on disk 2, along with the offset filter that is used to shift the image on the canvas.

The drop shadow is now easier to use and you can optionally create the shadow as a new layer. Lens distortion can be used to simulate pincushion, fisheye, or barrel distortion to an image. Polar coordinates transforms pixels by mapping them from rectangular to polar or vice versa. More on this on disk 2.

User defined filters now has a number of presets and now uses the standard effect dialog that supports previewing, proofing, and adding presets. New to the adjust menu is black and white points that allows you to correct the color of an image by specifying how to adjust at least one of a highlight color, a midtone color, and a shadow color.

The Histogram Adjustment dialog now displays the histogram of both the original image and the adjusted image.

Disk 2 we go over all of the layer changes as the layering system has changed in several significant ways. It now supports layer groups which are different from layer grouping in PSP7. Masks are now treated as a type of layer, so the old mask menu has been removed and its functionality has migrated to the layer menu.

PSP8 introduces the selection edit mode, where the selection is treated as if it were a layer. In this mode all of the raster painting/drawing tools and effects can be used to modify the selection marquee. In selection mode the marquee is automatically replaced with a colored overlay called a ruby lith. You will see more of this in different lessons, especially in the text lesson.

Selection modifiers - boy are there a lot of new options here and you will learn more about them in the Selections Lesson on Disk 2. All of the selection modifiers now support the standard proof/preview/preset controls on the dialog box and the view can be toggled between showing the selection against transparency or showing the resulting selection marquee.

Painting ~~ OMG when you get to the painting lesson you are going to be astounded as to what you can do with the paint tools now. There is a brush variance palette, the ability to not only save brushes but to save presets and nibs. You are going to enjoy these two lessons on Disk 2.

Freehand Selection now has a new mode called Edge Seeker, which is similar to the existing Smart Edge mode, but it is better at following a weak edge or weak edge next to a strong one. Here's a neat trick for you - by holding down the alt key while drawing, the selection mode is temporarily switched from the edge seeker mode back to freehand for dragging or point to point by clicking - so it is possible to mix the modes in one selection operation.

The Magic Wand now has the ability to antialias a selection and the eyedropper now supports multiple sampling sizes, from the single pixel used in PSP7 up to an 11x11 square.

The text tool has been completely redesigned and you will learn more about this in lesson 12 on disc 1. The line tool and node edit tool have been combined into a single tool called the Pen tool. A number of new node edit functions exist, including a contour knife for breaking contours. There is a Pen Tool overview lesson on Disk 2 as well as some vector lessons.

There is a perspective tool new to PSP8 that is designed to fix perspective errors on an image, along with a straighten tool to straighten scanned or tilted photos. The mesh warp tool is new to PSP8. This is a method of warping an image by distorting a mesh laid on top of the image. Moving the handles in the mesh moves the corresponding pixels in the image accordingly.

Warp Brush lets you distort and image almost as if it were made of rubber. You can stretch, shrink, twist, push, etc. and you will learn a little about this in the text lesson on Disk 1 and more on it on Disk 2.

Another new tool is the Background Eraser which is ideal for the tubers, check out disk 2 for more on this new tool.

The overview window now includes a zoom slide bar and a new tab called Info. The info tab displays both general information about your image and your cursor position.

When you Exit PSP8 there is a new dialog box that pops up if you have any unsaved images. SEE VIDEO BY CLICKING HERE

This is what is new and/or improved in PSP8 and now you can understand why this has turned into a 2 disk set, actually it easily could have gone to 3 disks. Enjoy the lessons, the tutorials and most of all enjoy PSP8.

You will find video lessons like this, and MUCH more, on V8 The Easy Way a TWO disk CD set for your learning pleasure. To find out more about this set click HERE.
