Many times when we take a picture, whether with a digital camera or a 35 mm, you will have overexposed and/or underexposed areas in your picture. The photograph that I am using for this example is one that I took of our new back porch.

(Click on the picture for a larger size)

As you can see by the arrows you can barely see what the porch looks like, or the back of the house. This didn't help when I was emailing the pictures to Larry so he could check out the house prior to my buying it ;-). The yard itself is overexposed and the porch has the shadows of underexposure. In the Affects Menu you will find a number of filters in Photo Fix. The first that we want to explore is the Backlighting filter, you will also find Fill Flash in the same menu.

Click on Backlighting and you will receive this dialog box.

The default is set at 20 strength. I used a strength of 40 to get this result.

To lighten up the underexposed shadowed porch I used the Fill Flash filter. This is the dialog box.

The default strength is 40 and I used a strength of 56 to get the following result.

As you can see, using either (or both) of these filters on a photograph can greatly enhance your work.

I hope this helps to show you a bit of what you can achieve by using the Backlighting and Fill Flash Filters.
