I was inspired to do this tutorial after doing a tutorial written by Peg W. called Laser Light. This used a new plug-in filter called Dragon Fly's Sinedots, well it was new to me LOL, and the possibilites for this filter are endless. I want to give a big thank you to Peg for introducing me to this filter. Please check out her tutorial here.

I made the mask using the Sinedot Plug-in and was quite impressed with how it turned out. If you would like to make YOUR own mask please go to my newest tutorial and learn how to do this here.

This tutorial is written in and for PSP Version 7 and assumes you have a working knowledge of PSP at an intermediate level. I am sure this can easily be done in Version 6 with a few adjustments in paths but I have only used Version 7 so I can't make promises *S*

You will need:

JASC's PSP (30 day free trial)- You can get it HERE
ULead's Art Texture - You can get the free version HERE
DragonFly's Sinedot Filter - You can get it HERE
**Unzip to your plugin folder

Moon's Designs Sinedot Mask - You can download it HERE
** Unzip to your PSP/Mask folder
A Graphic ~~ I used Island Dream by Jim Warren. Mr. Warren has graciously given me permission to use all of his works in my tutorials. You can view his masterpieces at his website HERE.

Wow ~~ I guess I created a lot of downloading for you on this tutorial but it's worth it in the long run *S*

Step 1:
Open your image in PSP and make a copy of it (Shift + D). The main reason for making a copy is in case I want to use the image again and forget to change the name when I save *S* You can close the original.

Step 2:
Depending on the size of your graphic you may want to reduce it by 75%. If you resize it don't forget to go to Effects --> Sharpen --> Sharpen.

Step 3:
Set your foreground color to a light color ~~ I used a pretty cream color #FDF2DB ~~ and your background color to white.

Step 4:
Add a new layer and flood fill this with your foreground color.

Step 5:
Go to Masks --> Load from Disk --> choose md-sinedot2 and press open.

Step 6:
Go to Masks --> Delete ...you will get a message that asks "Would you like this mask merged into the current layer?" Answer yes. SAVE your image. (I want to remind you to save (Ctrl S or F12) often just in case your PSP decides to close up on you)

Isn't this gorgeous? Let's dress it up a bit and add a frame that will use the Sinedots filter.

Step 7:
Go to Layers --> Merge --> Merge All Flatten

Step 8:
Go to Image -->add borders Make sure symmetric is checked and enter 5 for the border size Click OK

Step 9:
Take your magic wand and select the white border -- you will get marching ants around the border.

Step 10:
Open your Ulead Art Texture plugin. Effects -->PlugIns-->Ulead-->Art Texture. Press edit and choose Pallet 5 (this is the gold one) Click OK and select one of the patterns and press OK (I used the bottom left one). You could also use a BladePro gold preset of your choice as well. Keep Selected.

Here are a couple of visuals for you to look at.

Step 11:
Go to Selections -->Invert and add the following cutout (Effects-->3D-->Cutout) Use these selections:

Step 12:
Reapply the cutout but change the Vertical and Horizontal Offsets to -4 (minus 4) leaving the opacity and blur the same. Deselect and SAVE

Step 13:
Add a new border and this time let's make the border size 25. With your magic wand select the border to get your marching ants and flood fill with your foreground color. This should still be the same color that you flood filled for the mask. Keep selected.

Step 14:
Go to Effects --> Plugins-->DragonFly-->Sinedot and use the following settings:

Remember this is YOUR creation so if you want to play around with the settings please feel free to do so. You will be amazed at all the designs you can make. Make sure Options Inverse is CHECKED ~~ then you will get the darker laser on your frame. I've had some people say they can't read the settings and I apologize for that. The settings from left to right are 1.47; -4.97; -1.75; -0.35 for the 1st Dimension. For the 2nd Dimension they are 0.76; 0.77; -3.43; 4.55. Balance X is 0.6 Density is 0.81 and Balance Y is 0.25.

Do NOT deselect yet.

Step 15:
Go to Selections --> Invert and apply the same cutout as we did before. Using 4 as the vertical and horizontal offset and applying again with these offsets set to minus 4. Deselect and save.

Step 16:
Add one more border ~~ this time make the size10. Get those marching ants moving around the border and apply the same gold selection from your Ulead Art Texture (or your BladePro preset that you used before). Keep Selected

Step 17:
Go to Effects --> 3D --> Inner Bevel and apply the following settings:

Keep Selected

Step 18:
Go to Effects -->3D-->Drop Shadow and apply these settings:

Step 19:
Apply the Drop Shadow one more time but using a (minus) -3 this time. Deselect and Save. Look at the beautiful creation that you just made!

If you are using this tutorial as a group lesson to be sent in we might need to have a Step 20 *S* It really depends on the size of your image to begin with. If you used Jim Warrens graphic, as I did, it is way to big to send to your groups especially after adding a frame.

Step 20 if needed:
If you need to resize your final work go to Images --> Resize. Here is something you need to know about resizing. One of the tricks you should use to squeeze the absolute best out of a resized image is to always try to resize to exactly three-quarters (75%), one-half (50%), or one-quarter (25%) the original image size. The mathematical reasons this works the best are beyond what I could explain in this little tip; but trust me--it works. Basically, Paint Shop Pro uses a complex algorithm to figure out which pixels to keep and which ones to throw out. Using a standard resize value lets PSP work at its optimal levels. I also have to add that ANY time you resize in PSP (including tubes!) you must sharpen your image for optimal viewing. Go to Effects --> Sharpen -->Sharpen.

I hope that you enjoyed this tutorial as much as I enjoyed making it for you. Many thanks to Elkay, Anneli, and Randie for testing this tutorial.
