In some of my linkware sets, I have an animated background, like the background you see on this page. *Smiles* I have had several requests on how I do this. One of the things I love, is to share with others how I have achieved a certain effect, and that is how this tutorial was born.

I use Eye Candy Swirl on a lot of my background tiles, and you can use different textures also. I also use the 20/20 program for making them seamless, depending on your texture or if you are using EyeCandy. VisMan Sparkle does an excellent job on adding the stars to your tile, although you can use a sparkle picture tube if you prefer.

My tutorials are only guidelines to help you accomplish a certain creation. Please feel free to be inventive and take whatever liberties you would like. I encourage each of you to do your "own thing" and make your creation yours! Your finished creation is yours to do with as you please.

This tutorial is written in and for PSP Version 7.04 and Animation Shop 3.04. It assumes you have a working knowledge of PSP at a beginners-intermediate level. I am sure this can easily be done in Version 6 with a few adjustments in paths but I have only used Version 7 so I can't make promises *S*

FOR THIS TUTORIAL YOU WILL NEED:
JASC's PSP (30 day free trial)- You can get it HERE
20/20 - You can get it HERE. This is a stand alone program, NOT a plugin filter.
Eye Candy 3 or 4 (optional) ~~ You can get Eye Candy 3 for Free HERE. This will only be available for a little while longer, so you might want to grab while you have the chance.
VisMan Sparkle ~~ You can get it HERE
** unzip into your plugins folder

Step 1:
Open a new image 150x150, 16 million colors, transparent background.
Set your foreground color to a "soft" color (I used #B16D6B), it doesn't matter what your background color is. Flood fill your image.

Step 2:
Add your preferred texture. If you have the texturizer plugin that comes with Photoshop, this makes an excellent choice. My preference is Eye Candy's Swirl. This is available in both EC3 and EC4. Because Eye Candy 3 is available for free, I will show you how I do the swirl in that plugin. Go to Effects-->Plugins-->EyeCandy3-->Swirl and apply the following settings. Click on the checkmark to apply.

Note: Eye Candy 4000 has a "make seamless" box that you can check, if you use that then you won't have to take it into 20/20.

Step 3:
Go to Effects-->Plugins-->VM Natural-->Sparkle and apply the default settings. You can also play around with the sliders to get a different effect if you like.

Step 4:
Now we will make the tile seamless.
Go to Edit-->Copy (Ctrl+C).

Step 5:
To make your tile seamless, open your 20/20 program. Paste (Ctrl+V) your tile into 20/20. Click on Image on the toolbar.

Click on Seamless Tile.

Your tile magically becomes seamless. This eliminates the lines on your background.

Make a copy of your seamless tile (Ctrl+C) and close your program.

Step 6:
We will now bring your tile into Animation Shop. While in PSP click on the filmstrip, Animation Shop will open.

Step 7:
Paste your seamless tile into Animation Shop (Ctrl+V). Go to Effects-->Insert Image Effect.

The following window will appear.

Make sure Animation Frame is checked. In the drop down menu under effect, scroll to Stained Glass. I have my Define effect set at 3.2 second for the length and 6 frames per second. Click OK when it starts the animation.

To check your animation, click on the filmstrip in the upper right corner. This will show you how it will appear when you use it.

Save your animated tile in your desired folder. You're done! Close out Animation Shop. Go back to PSP, you can either close out your original or save it in case you want to have it as a static background.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial as much as I did creating it for you.
